UNRWA offices shut over services disqualification in Rafah

UN Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) local offices have been closed by Palestinian refugees in Rafah, southern Gaza Strip, to protest their disqualification from receiving aid from the agency. The UN agency has notified some refugees that they no longer fit the "extremely poor" category which qualifies them to receive aid. UNRWA provides food, education, sanitation and – in some cases - fiscal assistance to some 5 million Palestinian refugees in Gaza, the West Bank and Arab countries, such as Syria and Lebanon. UNRWA spokesman Adnan Abu Hassna earlier confirmed disqualifying 9,500 Gaza families from UNRWA's food aid program after a survey by the agency showed they no longer fitted the "extremely poor" category. But he asserted that 4,500 "extremely poor" families had been added to the program..
