In an extraordinary acknowledgment of Omar bin Khattab - second Caliph of the Muslims, India’s Capital Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said he was deeply impressed by his governance, and will try to follow him for the betterment of the people.
"I am extremely impressed by the governance of Caliph Omar Farooque and will try to follow his model of governance for the betterment of people" said CM Kejriwal said while addressing a workshop at India Islamic International Centre, Ummid reported.
Kejriwal's comments was in response to Aateqa Siddiqui, a girl student, who presented a book on the governance of Caliph Omar Farooque.
Mr Kejriwal also said that he would study the whole book and try to implement the model of Caliph Omer.
This is not the first time any Indian leader has found inspiration from the governance of Caliph Omar. Mahatma Gandhi in one of his articles not only praised Caliph Omar but also said India needed a leader like him.
Writing in ‘Harijan’ (issue dated 27-07-1937), Gandhi advised his fellow Congressmen on leading a life of simplicity in this fashion:
“I cannot present before you the examples of Sri Ram Chandr and Sri Krishn as they are not personalities recognized by history. I cannot help but present to you names of Abu Bakar (RA) and Umar (RA). They were leaders of a vast empire, yet they lived a life of austerity", Gandhi wrote.
Caliph Omar, also spelled Umar, born 577 CE – died 3 November 644 CE, was one of the most powerful and influential Muslim caliphs (successors) in history.
He was a prominent Sahaba (companion) of Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him). He succeeded 1st Islamic Caliph Hazarat Abu Bakr (632–634) as the second caliph of the Rashidun Caliphate on 23 August 634.
He was an expert Islamic jurist known for his pious and just nature, which earned him the epithet Al-Farooq ("the one who distinguishes between right and wrong").. Tags: #
