Jihad Dib, state’s first Muslim MP elected in Lakemba, Australia

The former Punchbowl Boys High School principal, Jihad Dib, who replaces former Lakemba Labor MP Rob Furolo, is the first Muslim MP after being elected to represent Lakemba seat, in New South Wales. Dib received a 14.9 per cent swing to Labor over Liberal candidate Rashid Bhuiyan after preferences. The Lakemba seat has the highest proportion of Muslim residents; most of them are Lebanese descents in NSW with 34.6 per cent. “This win belongs to all of us,” he wrote on his social network page to thanks his supporters following the victory. Despite representing a community with a sizeable Muslim population, Dib who’s parent emigrated from Lebanon in the seventies said he did not want to be known only as a Muslim MP. “I don’t want to be painted as a Muslim candidate, if elected I am representing everybody,” Dib told to media during his election campaign. “We are all Australians, your culture and religion is very important but what is also important is I am representing the whole area which has many cultures.” He said. “He’s from the community, he understands the issues of the community,” Lebanese Muslim Association president Samier Dandan said. Lakemba is a suburb in south-western Sydney, in the state of New South Wales, Australia. Lakemba is located 15 KM Sydney central business district, in the local government area of the City of Canterbury..
