ISAF soldier killed in Afghanistan

A soldier of the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) was killed in Afghanistan Wednesday. "An International Security Assistance Force service member died of wounds as a result of an attack in eastern Afghanistan today," the ISAF said in a statement issued here. The brief statement gave neither the nationality of the victim nor the details about the incident under the ISAF policy, only saying "it is ISAF policy to defer casualty identification procedures to the relevant national authorities", Xinhua reported. Earlier in the day, an unidentified man attacked a foreigner with a knife in Afghanistan's capital Kabul and tried to behead him. The foreigner, who was seriously wounded, was shifted to a nearby hospital. Kabul too is located in eastern Afghanistan. However, it is not known whether the two attacks were related. The soldier's death has brought to 58 the number of foreign soldiers killed in the country so far this year. More than 44,000 NATO-led ISAF troops, down from the peak of 130,000 in 2010, are stationed in Afghanistan. Some 30,700 of them are Americans and the US plans to trim its forces to less than 10,000 next year..
