Iraq has its first female mayor for capital Baghdad

Iraqi government spokesman announced on Saturday that Dr Zekra Alwach, a civil engineer and former director general for the Ministry of Higher Education, had been appointed as Baghdad’s mayor,. Zekra Alwach is being seen as a highly-skilled and competent technocrat. As mayor, the most important administrative position in the capital, she will report directly to the prime minister and hold the prerogatives of a cabinet minister. The new mayor has joined her office from Sunday, February 22. Alwach is the first female to be assigned to such a post in the whole country as well as any Arab League capital. Alwach's appointment is a bold step for gender equality in Iraq, where human rights groups say discrimination and violence against women is widespread. In recent years Iraq is plagued by car bombings, sectarian killings, and militants from the Islamic after the American alliance invasion. Iraq’s overall security situation has worsened as result of lose control of government, according to the UN Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI), a total of 1,375 Iraqis lost their lives only in previous month, while 2,240 others were injured as a result of the violence in the country..
