Former Communist guerrilla leader turned activist T N Joy embraces Islam


Former Naxal leader turned a well- known social and political activist T.N. Joy, Tuesday announced his conversion to Islam and his new name ‘Najmul N Babu’ according to media reports.
Joy was the leader of the Naxalite movement in 1970s and was arrested during Emergency.
Naxal or Naxalite member of Communist guerrilla groups in India, mostly associated with the Communist Party of India (Maoist). The term Naxal derives from the name of the village Naxalbari in West Bengal, where the movement had its origin
“My conversion to Islam is my way to protest against the increasing religious fascism against Muslims. I am changing my name from Joy to Najmal,†he said. “Religion is the sigh of Masses,†Former Naxal leader quoting Karl Marx’s statement.
“At the time of religious fascism, I am resigning from the religion into which I was born. I dream of a society where such religious conversions are not news,†Babu (Joy) said.
Babu announced his decision through a social media post on Monday. “The process is not over. I welcome your comments,†the post said.
Confirming the news, Babu said. “As part of his struggle against the casteism, my father gave me the name Joy and I am taking it further. I have taken the name Najmal N Babu,†.
“Fascist tail has grown to all Hindus after the demolition of historical Babri Masjid. Muslims in the country are feeling threatened,†he said.
Babu said he has not decided to join any Muslim association.
