Dubai Unveils Plans for ‘Mall of the World’ Domed City

Dubai ruler Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum has said he wants to build a 450ha climate-controlled “city within a city”. Complete with 100 hotels, Broadway-style theatres and a theme park, the Dubai super-mall will feature a waterfall, lake and ship. The air-conditioned “city within a city” will be four times the size of the MetroCentre in Gateshead, the largest shopping centre in the UK. There will also be a “celebration district” designed in the style of Las Ramblas in Barcelona. Inside the United Arab Emirates mega-mall there will be 7km of climate-controlled roads based on London’s Oxford Street, which would be open to the air during the warm winter but covered over and air-conditioned during the 45C Gulf summer. Dubai ruler Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum said: “The growth in family and retail tourism underpins the need to enhance Dubai’s tourism infrastructure as soon as possible. “This project complements our plans to transform Dubai into a cultural, tourist and economic hub for the two billion people living in the region around us – and we are determined to achieve our vision.” According to Dubai Holding, the Sheikh’s property arm, “tourists will be able to enjoy a week-long stay without the need to leave the city or use a car. “The 7km long promenades connecting all facilities will be covered during the summer and open during the winter, ensuring pleasant temperatures throughout the year.” The complex is planned for Sheikh Zayed Rd, a short drive from the world’s tallest tower, the 828m Burj Khalifa. According to the project’s press release, the domed wellness area “will offer a holistic experience to medical tourists and their families, ensuring access to quality healthcare, specialised surgical procedures and cosmetic treatments.” There has so far been no indication of the cost of the project or the completion date..
