Bangladesh Supreme court sentences Jamaat-e-Islami leader to death

 

Bangladesh's Supreme Court has issued order of death penalty after rejecting of appeal of a leader of Jamaat E Islami against his jail term for war crimes. In February, Leader of the Jamaat-e-Islami Abdul Kader Mullah was convicted by a special tribunal of crimes during the 1971 war of independence with Pakistan. The life sentence imposed at the time sparked angry street protests in the country. The ruling in the case of Abdul Quader Mollah, assistant secretary general for the now-banned Jamaat-e-Islami party, set off rioting in the streets and prompted the party to announce a two-day general strike across the country. "The appeal filed by the state has been allowed, while the appeal filed on behalf of Abdul Quader Mollah has been rejected," Chief Justice Md. Mozzammel Hossain, who led a five-member Appellate Division bench of the Supreme Court, announced..
